The Colorado Department of Transportation will begin a major roadway improvement project along Interstate 70 near Seibert and Stratton in Kit Carson County starting in mid-April, with work expected to continue through October 2027. The project will address deteriorating pavement, aging bridges and safety upgrades along a six-mile stretch of the interstate and adjacent state highway.

CDOT and contractor Harper Brothers Construction will replace deteriorated concrete pavement, rehabilitate bridges and install a new concrete overlay on I-70 between Mile Points 401 and 407. Bridge work will include removing and resurfacing existing bridge decks, replacing joints and completing structural repairs. Additional improvements include guardrail replacement, new delineators, updated signage and fresh pavement striping.

The initial phase will involve constructing crossover detours east and west of Seibert to facilitate head-to-head traffic while crews work. A winter shutdown is anticipated between October 2026 and April 2027.

Work will also take place on Colorado Highway 57 (Colorado Avenue) in Stratton between the I-70 interchange and US Highway 24 (Fourth Street). That segment will be milled and paved with a hot-mix asphalt overlay. Crews will reconstruct select curb and gutter sections and install new signage and pavement striping. The on- and off-ramps at the Seibert and Stratton interchanges will also be resurfaced, requiring intermittent ramp closures.

Traffic impacts

Preconstruction activities are expected to begin soon with shoulder and lane closures along I-70 near Seibert. By mid-May, traffic on I-70 will shift to a 24/7 head-to-head configuration for concrete paving and structure improvements. Alternating-lane closures are expected along Colorado Highway 57 between I-70 and US Highway 24 for roadway rehabilitation. Intermittent ramp closures with detours will occur at the Seibert and Stratton interchanges.

A 12-foot width restriction will be in place and the speed limit on I-70 will be reduced to 55 mph through the work zone. Motorists should watch for construction vehicles entering and exiting the area.

Daytime work hours are Monday through Friday, beginning 30 minutes after sunrise and ending 30 minutes before sunset. Weekend work is possible. Schedules may be affected by weather and other delays.
