Kiowa County weather outlook – week of September 29
It is an interesting forecast that I have for you. We start out with sunny skies, record heat with low 90s and winds gusting over 40 miles per hour for Sunday and Monday. We will start to see the transition to much cooler temperatures Tuesday with a high in the low 70s and lows in the 40s. By Wednesday, high temperatures will only be in the 60s. There will be scattered showers and a thunder shower or two off and on during the week as these fronts move across our area. The coolest night would be Wednesday night, around 40 degrees. For October 4-10 you can expect highs in the mid- to upper 70s.
Last year, our first fall freeze came October 14, but it can sure vary from year to year. The earliest on record is September 9, 2001, and the latest was November 1, 1963.
There is something interesting to watch for in the evening sky after dark. The moon and the planet Jupiter will be getting closer together October 2 and will be side-by-side October 3. Be sure and look at the sky after dark Thursday night because this should be interesting. This will just be a little sliver of a moon, called a waxing crescent moon.
If you would be interested in keeping a daily tab on your rainfall and reporting it to the National Weather Service, go to htt://cocorahs.org to get all of the information on how to sign up. You only have to take one observation in the morning and then go online and enter the rainfall recorded during the past 24 hours. I am a daily contributor, and this weather information can be very valuable to the Weather Service. It is lots of fun to compare rainfall totals to the surrounding counties.
