Prowers County faces a few more rounds of thunderstorms Wednesday and Thursday before dangerous heat builds in over the weekend, the National Weather Service in Pueblo says. Lamar can expect a high near 85 Wednesday, warming into the low 90s by Friday and reaching 105 both Saturday and Sunday.

Wednesday will be cloudy through mid-morning before gradual clearing, with a high near 85 and breezy southeast winds increasing to 15 to 20 mph and gusting to 30 mph in the afternoon. A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms returns Wednesday night, mainly between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m., with a low around 58.

Stephen Hodanish, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pueblo, wrote in Tuesday's Area Forecast Discussion that a severe storm threat will continue across the plains into Friday before the weekend turns "HOT and DRY" with 100-degree readings returning. He noted that meteorological conditions for extreme fire behavior will be in place across the plains both Saturday and Sunday.

Dangerous heat and fire weather for the weekend

Lamar will be among the hottest spots in the region, with highs near 105 forecast for both Saturday and Sunday and overnight lows only dipping into the upper 60s and low 70s. Breezy southwest winds gusting to 35 mph, combined with the heat and dry air, will create critical fire-weather conditions even though no formal Red Flag Warning covered Prowers County as of Tuesday. Residents should take heat precautions — staying hydrated, limiting midday exertion and checking on vulnerable neighbors — and avoid activities that could ignite dry vegetation.

Thursday and Friday

Thursday turns mostly sunny with a high near 88 and a 30 percent chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms as winds shift to the northeast. Showers are likely Thursday night, possibly with a thunderstorm, with a low around 56. Friday warms further to near 92 under skies that become sunny, with breezy south-southeast winds gusting to 30 mph.

Extended outlook

The weekend brings the season's hottest stretch so far. Saturday and Sunday both top out near 105 with bright sunshine and breezy southwest winds. Overnight lows will offer little relief, holding in the upper 60s to low 70s. The heat, low humidity and gusty winds will keep fire danger elevated across Prowers County through Sunday.
