Lamar nears 103 Wednesday before a Thursday cooldown in Prowers County
Dangerous heat tops the forecast for Prowers County on Wednesday, with sunny skies and a high near 103 expected in the Lamar area before a cold front overnight drops Thursday's high about 18 degrees, into the mid 80s.
Wednesday stays sunny and hot, with west winds of 10 to 15 mph turning easterly in the afternoon. The night is mostly clear with a low around 60 as winds shift to the northeast behind the front after midnight.
"Hot across the Plains," a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pueblo wrote in Wednesday's Area Forecast Discussion, with "highs across the Plains" forecast to "reach into the upper 90s to lower 100s" before cooler air arrives.
Peak heat, then relief
Lamar's high near 103 is among the hottest readings in southeast Colorado on Wednesday. A Heat Advisory was issued to the west for El Paso, Pueblo and eastern Fremont counties, but not for Prowers County; even so, the heat warrants the usual precautions of staying hydrated and limiting strenuous outdoor activity during the afternoon.
The cold front that ends the heat pushes south across the plains overnight, turning winds to the northeast and bringing much cooler air for Thursday. Prowers County is not included in Wednesday's Red Flag Warning, which covers the mountains and zones west of Interstate 25.

Thursday and Friday
Thursday is the most comfortable day of the period, mostly sunny with a high near 85 and northeast winds of 10 to 15 mph turning southeast in the afternoon. The night is mostly clear with a low around 58.

Weekend outlook
Heat returns in force Saturday with sunny skies and a high near 102 on breezy south winds of 15 to 25 mph. The Pueblo office cautioned that strong winds and humidity under 10 percent could drive widespread high fire danger Saturday, with the threat reaching toward the Kansas border depending on how far the dry air mixes east.
Sunday turns a little cooler behind a weekend front, with mostly sunny skies and a high near 96, followed by a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms Sunday night as moisture returns to the plains.
With triple-digit heat Wednesday and again Saturday, residents should limit time outdoors during the afternoon, check on vulnerable neighbors and never leave children or pets in parked vehicles.
