Colorado residents have until April 30 to apply for the Low-income Energy Assistance Program, which provides help with heating costs and other home energy needs, according to the Colorado Department of Human Services.

The program helps eligible households pay a portion of winter heating bills and can also provide additional benefits, including weatherization services and emergency furnace repair or replacement.

More than 105,000 Coloradans have applied for assistance during the current season, but state officials estimate about 80 percent of eligible residents have not applied.

Eligible households may receive between $200 and $1,000 in assistance, depending on income, heating fuel and other factors.

“Many people think they shouldn’t apply because the weather has been mild, but LEAP is about more than just a one-time payment,” said Maria Hopps, LEAP interim supervisor. “Between weatherization and emergency furnace support, we are helping families make their homes more efficient and safer for the long term. If you think you might be eligible, don’t wait for a cold snap—apply now.”

To qualify, households must have income at or below 60 percent of the state median income and pay home heating costs either directly or as part of rent. At least one household member must be a United States citizen or permanent legal resident.

For a family of four, the income limit is $6,938 per month, or $83,256 annually.

Applications can be submitted online at https://cdhs.colorado.gov/leap, by phone at 1-866-432-8435, or in person at local county human services offices.

The Low-income Energy Assistance Program is federally funded and serves families, seniors and individuals across Colorado.
