Fifteen years ago today, 2,996 people died in coordinated terrorist attacks on targets in New York City and Washington, D.C.

At the World Trade Center, 2,606 perished, while 125 died at the Pentagon. An additional 265 died aboard the planes that were flown into the buildings and one that crashed in Pennsylvania as passengers revolted against the attackers.

President Barack Obama has ordered flags lowered to half-staff to remember the victims and responders from the attacks.
