Storms accompanied by lightning sparked several fires in Kiowa County this week.

The largest fire occurred Tuesday near county roads 57 and D in eastern Kiowa County. Seven agencies, including neighboring fire departments, were engaged to battle a blaze that charred 950 acres. Thirty members of the Kiowa County Fire Protection District supported the efforts, along with Kiowa County Road and Bridge workers and local agricultural producers.

Responders returned to the same area Wednesday as wind blew ash and dirt across the burn scar, creating concern that the fire had rekindled, however no active fire was located.

Lightning Thursday sparked two more fires. The first was a small fire north of Eads which was quickly doused by heavy rain from thunderstorms in the area.

A second fire was reported south of Chivington near county roads 53 and K. Kiowa County crews were able to quickly bring that fire under control.
