Matthew Carl Mosher left us all too soon at the age of 44 June 2, 2024, in Boyero. He was known far and wide for being a great friend who always looked for ways to encourage everyone around him.

He was born to William and Carlene Mosher and grew up on his family’s ranch near Karval with his three siblings, who formed an incredible bond that kept them extremely close throughout his life. Bill and Carlene inspired the four Mosher kids to share an enthusiasm for rodeo from a young age that became a lifelong passion for them all. Matt’s family meant everything to him. He reveled in their successes, and would move heaven and earth to be there for them at the drop of a cowboy hat.

Matt had a dream of becoming one of the best bareback riders in the world from as far back as he could remember. He first started riding bucking horses when he was 12 years old, and won numerous rodeos to rise to the top of multiple youth rodeo associations.

In 1998, he started competing in pro rodeos, and went on to win over $104,501 throughout his decade-long career. He became one of the best at spurring bareback, winning the PRCA Mountain States Circuit Finals Rodeo average title in 2004 to qualify for the DNCFR in Pocatello, Idaho. The following season, he scored 90 points twice in one month -- at Logandale, Nevada, on Growney’s Sock Dancer, and at Guymon, Oklahoma, on Carr’s Riverboat Annie. He also became the Guymon Pioneer Days Champion in 2005, when he set the arena record that he held for over 18 years.

Matt retired from riding bucking horses in 2010 only to have a comeback in 2014 when the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo became an invitational. He once again went 90 points by riding Burch’s Pin Ball Girl in the shootout round to become the reserve bareback champion.

Matt met his future wife, Rose, in 2001. They married in 2005 and shared just shy of 19 wonderful years together. He taught, encouraged and supported her with learning horsemanship and roping.

They had two children who, as Matt would say, were not the “most” important thing but the “only” important thing in their lives. Ashlyn Mosher, 15, was the darling of his eye, and his “Tom” cowboy, as she loves everything to do with cattle, horses, and rodeo. Spencer Mosher, 12, made him so proud for being a tough and handy cowboy who works hard at taking care of his animals, and shows the same care for the people around him that his dad did.

Matt was a rancher all of his life, from the time he could ride a stick-horse to his last day with us, when he was riding one of his best horses to put out bulls. He worked on his family’s ranch until he was 17, when his Grandpa Don passed away due to an accident. Matt idolized his Grandpa Don, and followed in his footsteps when it came to how to do things, whether it was handling cattle or the way he conducted his business. He admired how well-respected his grandpa was for going over and above to be a good neighbor and get along with everyone he knew. After the loss of Don, he went to work for his Grandma Wilma, who gave him his first opportunity to buy his own ranch in 2009. One of his favorite things to do was to go and visit with her and listen to her stories and seek her advice.

Matt will be missed dearly by all who knew him, and were fortunate to call him a friend. He is known by all of them for his genuine smile and for always finding a good thing to say to everyone he met to encourage them and build them up. This world could use more great cowboys like Matt. If God’s got a heaven for cowboy legends, then Matt is up there spurring “suped-up hoppers” and riding good horses while chasing cattle on a thousand hills.

Matt is survived by his wife, Rose Mosher, and children, Ashlyn and Spencer Mosher, all of the family home in Boyero. He is also survived by his mother Carlene Mosher, of Karval; sister, Jessica Mosher (David Breickler) of Karval; brothers, Chad (Michelle) Mosher of Calhan, and Wade (Megan) Mosher of Hugo; grandmother, Wilma Mosher of Karval; uncle, LeRoy Mosher of Karval; and aunt, Donna (Richard) Metcalf of Limon.

Matt is preceded in death by his father, William (Bill) Mosher, and his grandfather, Don Mosher

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. June 10, 2024 at the Schafer Ranch, 29451 Highway 63 in Boyero. Signs will be posted. Burial will follow at the Boyero Cemetery. 

The family respectfully requests in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Matt Mosher Memorial Fund, to be used for the benefit of his children, in care of any Eastern Colorado Bank location.
