  • About Town- Ida & Doris Lessenden: I had a call from an older gentleman who said, “Doris, I sure think it would be nice to mention how many people were glad to see a marching band in the parade.”
  • East End Events-Lana Weber: I would like to congratulate everyone that participated in the Kiowa County Fair. I don’t know about anyone else, but it went too quickly for me.
  • Wild Horse Roundup-Curtis Schrimp: Today Mary & I went to the Kiowa County Fair. Lee Stayed home as it just too much walking. We visited with a lot of people that if I tried to name them all would run out of paper.

  • A five-member delegation of a Mexican wheat buying team are in Cheyenne Wells today. The Mexican Buying delegations represents organizations and flour mills that purchase over 80% of the wheat imported by Mexico
  • Towner Tales-Ann Harkness: This area may have a small population, but a large number of residents hold offices or are very involved in the community, farm and ranch organization and politics. I believe that this says a lot about our rural area.

September 21, 1979

  • 4-H Livestock sale tops $36,000, a record breaker. Average price paid for 22 head of cattle was 90c per pound. There were a record number of hogs with 37 head selling at average $1.06 per pound.

September 19, 1969

  • Kip Peck, 10-year-old son of Mr. & Mrs. Peck, proudly displays the All-Around rodeo contestant saddle he won at the Kiowa County Fair.
  • Towner News: Report of 6 to 7 inches or rain were received at Towner last week.
  • Lauren Hiler reported 4.50 inches of rain at their place north of Galatea Tuesday night.
  • Haswell Happenings: A good rain amounted to 1.06 inches fell Tuesday and Wednesday, for which everyone is very thankful.

September 15, 1944

  • The Colorado Public Utilities Commission formally ruled Sept.1, 1944, that all properties of Highland Utility Co. in Baca and Kiowa counties may be transferred to Southeast Colorado Power Association of La Junta. It is expected that change of ownership will be completed by the 1stof October 1944.

September 19, 1919

  • P.G. Kratz opened a real estate office in the hotel this week. E.C. Bell of Kiowa Land Co. is now occupying a room on the ground floor of the Nipps Building.
  • There are now five residences contracted for or in the process of construction and with two new buildings in the business district, Eads will take quite a step forward as far as public improvements are concerned
