Prowers County heads toward 101 degrees Saturday after midweek storms
Lamar starts the period sunny and comfortable Wednesday with a high near 89 degrees, but after a round of Wednesday night thunderstorms the Prowers County heat builds steadily, reaching a forecast 101 degrees Saturday, the National Weather Service in Pueblo said.
Wednesday is sunny at Lamar with a high near 89. Northwest winds of 5 to 10 mph shift to the east during the afternoon. Wednesday night brings a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 11 p.m., under mostly cloudy skies with a low around 62. East-southeast winds of 5 to 10 mph turn west-southwest after midnight, and rainfall of less than a tenth of an inch is expected outside of thunderstorms.
"Heavy rain, strong winds in excess of 60 mph and hail of 1 to 2 inches in diameter will be possible across the plains on Wednesday," a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pueblo wrote in Tuesday's Area Forecast Discussion, citing enhanced upslope flow and low-level moisture behind a weak backdoor front.
Storms Wednesday, then building heat
Forecasters said storms are expected to develop over the higher terrain during the late morning and afternoon Wednesday, then strengthen as they move into the Interstate 25 corridor and the southeast plains through the evening. Moisture across the region is running well above normal, raising the potential for locally heavy rainfall with any storm that reaches Prowers County.
No Red Flag Warning or fire weather watch covers Prowers County or zone 236. A Flash Flood Watch issued by the Pueblo office applies to mountain zones to the west, including the Aspen Acres burn area, and does not include Prowers County.
Once the Wednesday night storms clear, the upper ridge is forecast to drift north and west, drying the air over the plains and allowing temperatures to climb sharply. Saturday's forecast high of 101 at Lamar is the warmest of the period among the three communities the Press tracks, and gusty south winds Friday night — up to 30 mph — combined with the heat will bring elevated fire conditions to the area even without a formal warning in effect. Residents should use care with equipment, vehicles and any open flame.

Thursday is sunny at Lamar with a high near 91. Southwest winds of 5 to 10 mph shift to the south-southeast at 10 to 15 mph during the afternoon. Thursday night is mostly clear with a low around 63 and a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before midnight.
Friday climbs to a high near 96 under sunny skies, with south winds of 10 to 15 mph. Friday night is partly cloudy with a low around 66 and south-southeast winds around 15 mph gusting as high as 30 mph.

Saturday is the hottest day of the period, with sunny skies and a high near 101 at Lamar. Southwest winds run around 10 mph, and the overnight low settles near 67 under partly cloudy skies.
Sunday remains hot, with mostly sunny skies and a high near 98. West winds around 10 mph turn to the northeast in the afternoon. Sunday night brings a chance of showers under mostly cloudy skies with a low around 64 as moisture returns to the region.
With triple-digit heat forecast Saturday, forecasters advise drinking water regularly, limiting outdoor work to the early morning and evening, and never leaving children or pets in parked vehicles. Anyone caught outdoors during Wednesday night's storms should seek sturdy shelter immediately.
