A late-season storm is bringing rain and a brief threat of snow showers to Lamar on Wednesday, followed by a hard overnight freeze. The wet pattern gives way to a sunny stretch through the rest of the week, with afternoon highs in Prowers County climbing into the mid-80s by Saturday.

Wednesday in Lamar is wet, with rain possibly mixed with snow showers in the morning, becoming all rain after 4 p.m. and a high near 42, the National Weather Service in Pueblo said. East-northeast winds will run around 10 mph, with chances of precipitation at 90 percent and isolated thunder possible. Less than a half inch of new snow accumulation is possible in the area.

Forecasters at the Pueblo office said the system is the result of multiple upper troughs merging over Colorado. "Wintry weather will continue across our area throughout the day today and into this evening, thanks to the merging of some passing upper troughs," forecaster Garberoglio wrote in Wednesday's Area Forecast Discussion. "As the system tracks to our east later tonight, clouds will start to clear and temperatures will plummet into early Thursday morning."

Freeze Warning overnight Wednesday

A Freeze Warning is in effect for Prowers County (zone COZ098) from midnight Wednesday until 8 a.m. Thursday. Forecast lows in Lamar drop to about 25 degrees. The warning is part of a broader plains advisory issued by the Pueblo office covering zones COZ083 through COZ089 and COZ093 through COZ099.

Newly planted gardens, blooming fruit trees and exposed plumbing are at risk during the freeze period. Producers with sensitive crops and livestock operators should plan accordingly through Thursday morning.

Friday is sunny, with a high near 76 and west winds around 10 mph that shift to east-northeast in the afternoon. Weekend outlook: hottest Saturday, cooler Sunday

Saturday is the warmest day in the forecast window for Lamar, with sunshine and a high near 86. South winds of 10 to 15 mph will shift to the north by afternoon. A weak disturbance brings a slight chance of showers or thunderstorms Saturday night under partly cloudy skies, with a low around 41. With dry conditions and breezy winds returning Saturday, residents should be mindful of grass and brush conditions even though no formal fire weather watches are in effect for the Pueblo area at this writing.

Sunday cools modestly behind a passing front, with a 20 percent chance of showers before noon and an afternoon high near 74 under mostly sunny skies. North winds will run 5 to 10 mph.
