Rain and a hard freeze Wednesday in Lamar; sunshine and mid-80s by Saturday
A late-season storm is bringing rain and a brief threat of snow showers to Lamar on Wednesday, followed by a hard overnight freeze. The wet pattern gives way to a sunny stretch through the rest of the week, with afternoon highs in Prowers County climbing into the mid-80s by Saturday.
Wednesday in Lamar is wet, with rain possibly mixed with snow showers in the morning, becoming all rain after 4 p.m. and a high near 42, the National Weather Service in Pueblo said. East-northeast winds will run around 10 mph, with chances of precipitation at 90 percent and isolated thunder possible. Less than a half inch of new snow accumulation is possible in the area.
Forecasters at the Pueblo office said the system is the result of multiple upper troughs merging over Colorado. "Wintry weather will continue across our area throughout the day today and into this evening, thanks to the merging of some passing upper troughs," forecaster Garberoglio wrote in Wednesday's Area Forecast Discussion. "As the system tracks to our east later tonight, clouds will start to clear and temperatures will plummet into early Thursday morning."
Freeze Warning overnight Wednesday
A Freeze Warning is in effect for Prowers County (zone COZ098) from midnight Wednesday until 8 a.m. Thursday. Forecast lows in Lamar drop to about 25 degrees. The warning is part of a broader plains advisory issued by the Pueblo office covering zones COZ083 through COZ089 and COZ093 through COZ099.
Newly planted gardens, blooming fruit trees and exposed plumbing are at risk during the freeze period. Producers with sensitive crops and livestock operators should plan accordingly through Thursday morning.
