The Colorado Department of Transportation and its contract partner Road Safe Traffic will begin placing rumble strips and striping multiple highways in southeast Colorado and the central front range on April 28.

Crews will begin by installing rumble strips and pavement markings on Colorado Highway 9, US Highway 24 and CO 78. They will then place epoxy pavement markings to CO 67 and CO 83. The project is expected to be complete by the end of June 2025.

Rumble strips consist of grooves cut into the pavement causing a vibration and rumbling sound when the tires of a moving vehicle come in contact with the cut pavement. The noise and vibration produced by rumble strips alert drivers when they leave the travel lane. They are an effective measure for reducing roadway departure crashes. The pavement striping and markings will make traveling conditions safer by providing brighter, more visible lines.

The project will take place in multiple counties on the following highways.

Park County:

• CO 9, between Hartsel and Fairplay (Mile Point 47.58 to MP 63.73)
• US 24, between Antero Junction and east of Hartsel (MP 226.55 to MP 253)

Teller County:

• CO 67, between Cripple Creek and Divide (MP 52.3 to MP 69.62)

El Paso County:

• CO 83, near Black Forest (MP 25.89 to MP 30.24)

Pueblo County:

• CO 78, between Beulah and Pueblo (MP 8.82 to MP 31.78)

Traffic Impacts

Beginning Monday, April 28, motorists will encounter road work on CO 9, US 24, CO 67, CO 78 and CO 83:

• Work will take place Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
• Work will eventually shift to Sunday through Thursday nights from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
• Various single lane and shoulder closures will take place within the work zones with reduced speeds
• Plan ahead and expect short delays
• Through lanes and turn lanes may be temporarily closed to traffic causing brief travel delays
• Travelers are discouraged from passing the striping truck and crossing over fresh paint, as this may damage a vehicle’s finish
• Please drive with patience during striping operations
• Construction schedules could change depending on the weather
• This is a swift moving, mobile operation; although work zones will only be in place for a few hours, motorists are urged to use caution and watch for heavy equipment
