School board president Lori Goldstein picked to replace Shannon Bird in Colorado House
Democrat Lori Goldstein will replace former state Representative Shannon Bird in the Colorado Legislature, a vacancy committee decided Sunday evening.
Goldstein was selected unanimously by the 34 members of the committee in House District 29, which includes parts of Westminster and Northglenn.
“I know that the next few months are going to be a learning curve, but it’s my on-the-job training for, hopefully, you to bring me back next fall,” she said, referring to the November election for the seat.
Bird announced her resignation from the Legislature in December to focus on her campaign in the Democratic primary for the 8th Congressional District seat. She nominated and supported Goldstein, the only candidate, on Sunday.
Goldstein is a former public school teacher and current president of the Adams 12 Five Star Schools Board of Education.
“I know the policies that shape our schools, and I understand the challenges facing students, educators and families,” she said. “I believe that providing a free and appropriate public education with adequate and stable funding must remain a top priority for Colorado. Our future leaders are sitting in our classrooms today, and they deserve our full investment.”
The Legislature reconvenes Wednesday for its 120-day regular lawmaking term. Goldstein will join a 43-member Democratic majority in the House of Representatives.
