Lamar will see a warm, breezy Saturday and a brief cooler turn Sunday before heat builds through the middle of next week, with high temperatures climbing toward the century mark, the National Weather Service says.

Saturday brings mostly sunny skies and a high near 94 in Lamar. Winds shift from the west-northwest at 15 to 20 mph to the northeast at 20 to 25 mph in the afternoon, gusting as high as 35 mph. Breezy conditions and low humidity are keeping fire danger elevated across the plains, though no red flag warning is in effect for Prowers County.

“Increasing flow will bring critical fire weather conditions back across portions of south central and southeast Colorado, along with temperatures back to well above seasonal levels, with triple digit readings possible across the southeast plains,” a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pueblo wrote in Saturday’s Area Forecast Discussion.

A brief break, then building heat

Sunday offers a short reprieve as a stronger cold front drops the high to near 73 under mostly cloudy skies, with a slight chance of showers and an afternoon thunderstorm possible. The cooler air does not last. Highs return to the mid-90s by Tuesday and climb to near 104 on Wednesday as westerly flow and upper-level ridging rebuild over the region.

Saturday and Sunday

Saturday night turns mostly cloudy with a low around 51 and breezy northeast winds gusting to 35 mph before easing after midnight, with a 30 percent chance of showers. Sunday’s cooler, cloudier conditions stand in contrast with the surrounding days, with rain chances staying modest.

Extended outlook

After a mild, partly sunny Monday with a high near 83, the heat builds quickly. Tuesday returns to full sunshine with a high near 96, and Wednesday turns hot, with a high near 104. Forecasters say the warming, drying and breezy pattern will bring critical fire weather conditions back to the area by midweek.

With high heat and gusty winds expected midweek, residents are encouraged to stay hydrated and to use caution with any potential ignition sources.
