Warm start gives way to stormy stretch for Kiowa County

Kiowa County heads into a week of weather contrasts as warm, sunny conditions Wednesday and Thursday give way to a cooler, storm-prone pattern by Friday before winds ramp up over the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

Wednesday will bring clear skies and a high near 81 degrees with light winds out of the west-northwest. Temperatures will drop to 38 overnight under mostly clear skies. Thursday looks similar, with highs climbing to 83 before a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms develops during the afternoon as a cold front approaches the region.

Stephen Hodanish, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service’s Pueblo forecast office, noted that Thursday’s storms will be driven by a cold front pushing through the area. That front will usher in a marked cooldown by Friday, when highs are expected to reach only the mid-60s under cloudy skies with a chance of rain showers.

Weekend storms, strong winds expected

Saturday shapes up as the most active day in the forecast, with showers and thunderstorms likely under mostly cloudy skies. Highs will recover to 77, but south winds will increase to 15 to 30 mph with gusts reaching 45 mph. The strongest storms could produce heavy rainfall.

Conditions will begin to clear Saturday night, though a chance of lingering showers will persist before midnight. Overnight lows will settle near 48 with gusty south winds continuing.

Sunday clears but stays breezy

Sunday will bring a return to sunshine with highs near 81, but southwest winds of 20 to 25 mph with gusts to 40 mph will keep conditions breezy. Forecasters at the Pueblo office have flagged Sunday and Monday as days when critical fire weather conditions are likely across the southeastern Colorado plains, with sustained high winds and very low relative humidity.

Extended outlook

Looking beyond the five-day window, cooler conditions and a chance of precipitation are expected to return by Tuesday as a weather system moves through the region. Highs could fall back into the low 60s.

Residents are advised to monitor conditions closely heading into the weekend, particularly on Sunday when fire danger will be elevated. The National Weather Service recommends avoiding outdoor burning and exercising caution with any activity that could produce sparks.
