Every weekday, millions of people hop in their vehicles and embark on their morning commute. Unfortunately, the emissions from the sea of cars and trucks on the road, combined with the amount of gas they consume, can have a significant negative impact on the environment. If you’re interested in living a greener lifestyle and reducing your carbon footprint, consider implementing these effective ways to make your morning commute more eco-friendly.

Get some exercise

One of the best ways to make your morning commute more eco-friendly is to get in some exercise. Riding your bike, rollerblading, walking, running, skateboarding, or scootering instead of taking a vehicle can effectively eliminate the negative environmental impact of your commute.

Of course, such options aren’t always a possibility on days when the weather is bad or if your office is more than a few miles away. However, if you have the option, combining your commute and daily exercise into one activity is a great way to save time and the planet.

Opt for a personal electronic vehicle

If you’re not interested in breaking a sweat before starting your workday, that’s understandable. A similarly eco-friendly alternative to getting in some exercise is to ride a personal electronic vehicle to work.

Also known as an electric rideable, a personal electronic vehicle refers to a compact, motorized micromobility vehicle such as a hoverboard or Segway. Such vehicles can typically transport individuals at speeds below 16 mph and are a great option for shorter commutes. Unlike gas-guzzling cars, a personal electronic vehicle does not consume fossil fuels or emit harmful fumes into the environment.

Don’t ride alone

If you work too far from your home to bike or take a personal electronic vehicle, you may have no choice but to ride to work in a vehicle that consumes gas. When doing so, the best way to minimize your negative environmental impact is to ride with others. For example, if you live in a larger city, consider utilizing public transportation. Or, if you live near other coworkers, arrange a carpool. Ultimately, the fewer gas-guzzling vehicles on the road, the better.
