“Do to others as you would have them do to you.” Luke 6:31

Mike McLoud’s son and wife, Justin and Kayla, and his daughter and her hustband, Amanda and Shawn Hokanson and little children, arranged and hosted a retirement reception for their father and grandfather at the senior citizen center in Eads last Saturday. Many of Mike and Cindy’s friends attended to greet Mike and congratulate him on his 45 years of work in the petroleum field. He started his career in Texas and worked under three related parent companies.

When Eads senior citizens came into the center Thursday for brunch, the rooms were decorated in green, with little ceramic potatoes for center pieces. Lonnie Hier arranged them with new small white and yellow flowers. Gail Voss prepared scrumptious foods for breakfast, and President Sylvia Weeks tried a delicious new recipe using roll dough topped with an egg-cheese mixture. The noon meal at the center will be March 16.

Congratulations to students from Kiowa County who were on one of three honor rolls at Lamar Community College for the fall semester. The Eads students are taking dual credit courses at the high school. This is a great financial savings when they attend LCC or other colleges later. Eads students on the honor rolls include Ross Brown, Magadlen Haase, Samantha Courkamp, Kylie McKibbon, Jakob Buller, Taygen Ferris, Kyra Sheridan, Taite Johnson, Raina Lynch, Rhealie Rittgers, Stacy Schofield, Ty Wilson, Jeni Weber, Lacy Van Campen, Jace Stum.

Lauretta Blankenbaker was buried at the Kit Carson Cemetery February 26 after her funeral in Burlington. Friends enjoyed a reception and in Kit Carson to visit with the family and former classmates. The Blankenbakers were members of the Eads Assembly of God Church for many years.

Congratulations to our esteemed veteran friend, Orville Mousel, who was 101 years old March 3, and his wife, Rita’s, birthday was March 6. Orville told me one time that he held Rita when she was a baby. That was when his parents went to visit her family east of Cheyenne Wells. Both Orville and Rita are doing fairly well in their home south of Eads in Kiowa Estates.

We extend our sympathy to Roger Saffer and Loraine and all the Saffer families. Roger’s mother, Joyce’s, funeral was in Flagler March 5.

The library ladies, Kemma Alfano and Valorie Briggs, have the library opened Tuesday through Friday. They have free masks and free COVID testing kits. These ladies work hard to create kids craft kits that are free also.

Mrs. Denise Nelson is pleased that 20 of her business education students have qualified to compete in the State Future Business Leaders of America conference in the spring. Those who qualified include Breanna Wilson, Stockton Mitchek, Kaden Dunlap, Magdalen Haase, Rhealie Rittgers, Ross Brown, A. J. Vasquez, Piper Sorter, Brenden Reifschneider, Andrew Grant, Aaron Musgrave, Colin Nelson, Benden Lening, Case Nelson, Cade McDowell, Spencer Uhland, Madison McDowell, Samantha Courkamp, Briana Habinck, and Donte Sierra. Several of these students are in two or more competitions.

Shirley Watts was delighted when her former coworker in the Weisbrod Hospital office came to visit her in the nursing home. Virgyln Griswould brought her a drawing by Alizabeth Hulteen of a giraffe because Shirley likes to collect giraffe art pieces.

The Eads Chamber of Commerce met to discuss plans for placing members business names and possibly logos on the chamber’s supply trailer, which would be parked along the highway, for advertising. Spaces will be sold for placement on the trailer. Brandon Hoffman reminded the Chamber that the county fair will be here sooner than we realize. The Chamber is accepting nominations for Citizen of the Year and Volunteer of the Year. They also discussed the annual Kids Free Fishing Day in May. We were glad to have Jan Richards back with us again.

Dr. Sean Oquist, Chiropractor from Lamar, takes appointments Wednesdays for adjustments in the Eads Hospital Annex (former doctor’s office years ago). One may call the Wiesbrod Hospital at 719-438-5401 for an appointment. I share that because I know that a monthly adjustment assures to maintain one’s health. Curtis Canopin, Certified Massage Therapists, has an office with Dr. Oquist in Lamar and takes appointments in Eads.

Julie (Nordquist) Zimmerman published a joyful photo and note of thanks to people for their prayers, cards, and help to her precious family while she was in the hospital for several months. We are glad for her family that she is with them in their home north of Galatia.

The County Republican Assembly will be March 12 at 2:00 p.m. in the Eads United Methodist Church basement.

This is Spring Break week. Track and baseball practices will continue for meets and games after March 21.

Linda (Oswald) Harper from Great Bend, Kansas, had not been in Eads for several years, so when she visited here, she was impressed with the growth of businesses around Eads. That is true. Chamber President Dennis Pearson said that places like the Love’s store and restaurant, truck parking, and the Hometown Gas & Grill are bringing in added tax money to Eads.

People who have driven north and south of Eads warn of long delays where Highway 287 is undergoing major upgrades to add passing zones. Some people have reported waiting 40 to 60 minutes on the drive to or from Lamar.

Driving around Eads these days is a challenge also because of laying fiber optic cables for Eastern Slope Rural Telephone Association in the allies and streets, which requires a lot of big equipment. When completed, the project will bring improvements to ESRTA’s internet service.
