“I thank my God every time I remember you.” Philippians 1: 3

What a good time we had last weekend watching our Eads Eagle baseball team on television win games from the Las Animas field. At the time of this writing, we are looking forward to watching the Eads High School boys team play in Eads for the regional meet Saturday. So, keep yourself posted on when the Eagles play again - in state playoffs, we hope.

The members of the Eads First Christian Church hosted a Baccalaureate Service for the Eads seniors last Sunday night. Canon Brown served as the Acolyte to light the candles in the seniors’ colors of light green and mauve. Kai Brown served as the usher for the seniors as the flower girls, Aspen Nelson and McKenzie Jones, presented them with lovely lavender carnations with lavender ribbons as they sat in the pew. These lovely flowers were donated by Trista Tuttle of Country Elegance in Eads. Pastor Lane Gooden gave a warm welcome and prayer for these seniors we are so proud of. Dawn James led scripture songs for the congregation to sing. Pastor Debra Gooden read meaningful verses from Psalm 20 and related them to the seniors. A special highlight of the evening was when Kennan Gooden played his guitar for his four young sons, Kyton, Kalex, Kalem, and Kyce to sing. The congregation burst into applause afterwards. They were probably as awe struck as I was to hear their harmony and sweet voices. Lay Pastor Gail Voss read scripture from Isaiah and told how meaningful this verse was to her son, Brett Rusher, who runs a buffalo ranch up in South Dakota. He has always relied on this scripture. Host Pastor Mark Imel based his sermon on Timothy 1 and 2 to share wise words for our seniors, who will go out into the world soon. Ladies of the congregation, under the leadership of Dawna Weirich, served delicious refreshments afterwards for all the guests and well-wishers for the seniors, who will graduate on May 25.

May 2, Brenda Leon, our new Activity Director, along with Linda and Marla, had a May Day celebration, which was fun.

I want to thank all the dear friends and family who have blessed me with lovely floral bouquets for my 88th birthday. Your greetings on the computer and cards are so appreciated. I am well and healthy, and so happy to be alive and enjoying my family and friends. We really enjoyed people coming and going as Linda Hopkins served cake and ice cream to us outside on the balcony and inside. It was indeed a happy day!

Our new Activity Director, Brenda Leon, at Weisbrod started us off with a “bang”. Each day at 11:00 a.m., we have been doing exercises, which are so good for our bodies. Lots of new activities have been planned for our enjoyment.

These all-night rains will be a blessing to our new flower garden. You are welcome to drive by Weisbrod Health on Luther Street in to see our pretty flowering plants.

May 3, Debra Gooden and a committee of ladies from Praise Community Church hosted an elaborate tea party for the ladies of the congregation and community guests. I heard compliments about the pleasant affair. How good it is to honor our mothers, grandmothers, and aunts.

Our adopted grandchildren in Charlene Gifford’s class came to visit us Wednesday for a sack lunch and games. Because of the rain, we ate, and they played inside in the dining rooms and hallways. The various games that we have here that the children liked to play were horseshoes, ring toss, and connect four. What fun they had! Best of all for us was when I asked them to sing some of the songs they sang at the school concert. Then they burst out in loud lively singing. What joy! And those songs are thanks, to the excellent teaching of Monica Uhland!

The Eads Chamber of Commerce was pleased to have six applicants for their scholarships from Eads and Plainview Schools. Two recipients were chosen. They also chose one of four logos designed by Kourtney Richards to be used on official Chamber of Commerce communications. More details were given about the Kid’s Fishing Day May 18 at Jackson’s Pond just south of Prairie Pines Assisted Living Community in Eads. There will be free lunch at noon hosted by the Chamber. This event is hosted by the Kiowa County Economic Development Foundation, Richards’ Calibrations, and the Colorado Parks and Wildlife. In fact, the game wardens may have fishing poles for some children. This has always been such a fun day for families in the past years.

Pam Lessenden, West End Senior Citizen Director, hosted the annual Mother’s Day Tea at the Haswell Senior Center May 7. Pam always has some entertaining games and facts to share. The ladies enjoyed delicious refreshments that some guests brought to share. Aren’t we thankful for the mothers in our families?

Some dates to remember:

  • May 12 - Eads Academic and Athletic Banquet.
  • May 13 - Hospital Auxiliary meet at 11:00 am.
  • May 21 - Eads senior dinner at noon, and Haswell senior supper at 5:30 p.m.
  • May 24 - Plainview graduation at 10:00 a.m. Eads senior graduation at 2:00 p.m.
  • May 27 - Sunday Senior Cards.

Memorial Day is May 26. Let’s remember to put decorations on our loved ones’ graves. My sister and her daughter already placed flowers at the hilltop cemetery above Arlington. Cemeteries will be prettier this year because of these spring rains.
