“Whatever you do, work at it with all of your heart as working for the LORD.” Colossians 3:29

People were wondering, “will we even be able to have the much-anticipated Weisbrod Thanksgiving dinner with our families? Will they get all thus snow and ice removed? Will our family members be snowed in?” Well, when last Sunday dawned, it was sunny fall-warm and the snow was removed enough for residents to get to maneuver in their wheelchairs. Jaton Wallace and Linda Hopkins of the Activity Department, and possibly others, had decorated the tables in fall colors and placed families in groups. Marla Gwinn Darnell and her dietary staff, Robin Joganson, Kyle Deter, Brenden Reifenshieder, J. B. Brown, and Krista Wood, worked many hours to prepare turkeys and the trimmings for over 100 guests.

Because of the larger amounts of snow than usual in our part of Colorado, the football and volleyball games were postponed. The Eads teams were vying for a berth in the state tournament, but they lost close games. The football game was played in the bright sunlight in the San Luis Valley at Sangre de Cristo. We could see the snowcapped Rocky Mountains in the background. It must have been a good experience or our students. As we watched the game on our television, we were impressed with how really well our football team played, made scores, and kept the score tied back and forth. Then, at the last half-minute, they made a touchdown to win. I pointed out to the ladies, “look we only have four players on the sidelines in uniform and they have an ‘army’ of players!”

Likewise, our volleyball team played their games at Briggsdale, but on Sunday. I heard that they did well, as they had all season, though they lost, falling just short of going to the state tournament this weekend. Congratulations to the two Eads sophomore players, Anna Wollert and Savanna Brown, who were listed on the First Team All-Conference Team. Bailey Sierra was listed on the Honorable Mention All-Conference Team.

On a side note, we had children who wore their fancy costumes - and many looked costly to me - when they came for “trick or treats” Halloween day and night. I asked a little girl if she was a certain sports star, she replied, “I am Anna Woolert!” That was little Rylee Cordova. One of our young men, who works in dietary, told me last week that he was a teacher’s aide for the first grade, and missed those children so much. He is so surprised when they see him in town and hug him. He is a tall polite person, J.B. Brown. Don’t you think that we all should remember that the younger ones are watching our behavior and lifestyle?

Another highlight of Veteran’s Day was the large seated dinner at the fairgrounds in Eads, where veterans and their loved ones enjoyed the evening. The staff and servers from JJ’s Restaurant served the delicious dinner. Over one hundred Kiowa Countians, plus folk from Kit Carson, Cheyenne Wells, and speakers from La Junta, Las Animas, and other towns came. Cindy McLoud and Moe Sanger gave an update on the renovation of the historic American Legion Hall. The highlight of the night was to honor our men and women who served in the military. Carole Spady and Michelle Nelson of the Haswell Quilts Valor Chapter made wonderful presentations of the quilts they created to Jerry McDaniel, Sheriff Bryan Williams, and Terry Riley. The quilts were exquisite! When one hears the biography of these men and some of their experiences, we cannot help to be so grateful for their years of service! I was so pleased that Terry and Areta Laird drove me out to this fine dinner.

We do thank the town employees for moving and scooping so much snow. Because of the snow and speed (I suppose), a big semi-truck jackknifed under the under pass. The Sheriff’s Office diverted the Highway 287 traffic down Maine Street.

Because of the great amount of snow, the monthly brunch was postponed until last Monday. The monthly senior dinner is our Thanksgiving turkey dinner November 20. One may bring a potluck dish, or you could donate to the fund at noon. Over at the Haswell Center, at 5:30 p.m. that evening, will be their monthly dinner.
