After a colectomy, many people believe their lives will never be the same. While there will undoubtedly be some changes, if you’ve gone through this surgery yourself, that doesn’t mean you won’t be able to do the things you used to love. This article contains a list of activities you’ll still be able to do with a colostomy bag. Don’t let it hold you back. Get out there and continue to pursue your hobbies and interests.

Exercise

Getting a good workout in is something you can still do with a colostomy bag. Staying active is even encouraged because it can help strengthen your stoma. Your doctor can recommend exercises that will do this more directly, but any workout routine is possible if you’re careful. People with colostomy bags have even gone on to be weightlifters and distance runners.

Swimming

Jumping in a pool seems like something that would no longer be possible with a stoma and colostomy bag. However, people who use these items can still go for a swim whenever they want. You just need to make sure you empty your bag beforehand and use waterproof tape to secure it while in the pool.

If you’re more worried about judging glances from people, you can buy yourself a swimsuit that can cover your stoma and bag. Plus, most pools will have downtimes when there are fewer people than average, so those can be ideal times to go.

Sports

Sports are another group of activities that’ll also be possible for those using a colostomy bag. For this one, you’ll need to consider how much contact the sport entails. For example, football might not be a good idea, while soccer might be okay as long as you don’t play too aggressively. Other sports like tennis and golf should also be good options for you, but be sure to ask your doctor if you’re ever unsure.

Travel

Another activity that many people with colostomy bags try to avoid is traveling. If you pack enough supplies for your trip, these pouches should never hold you back. There are plenty of other tips for traveling with an ostomy bag that will make the experience much easier, but you should never run into any limitations. Whether you’re visiting family or seeing the world, a colostomy bag won’t keep you down.
