Call-in Legal Clinic Assists Rural, Low-Income Residents of SE Colorado

iStock

Beginning two months ago Colorado Legal Services began partnering with Brownstein Hyatt Farber and Schreck to provide free brief legal consultations to low-income residents from Southeast Colorado by phone. This accessible and toll-free legal clinic can help residents of the 3rd (Huerfano, Las Animas), 15th (Baca, Prowers, Kiowa, Cheyenne) and 16th (Otero, Bent, Crowley) Judicial Districts get the help they need to navigate the legal challenges they and their families face.

Low-income participants, not represented by an attorney, are able to call this clinic on the third Wednesday of every month from 5 to 8 pm. The toll free number for the clinic is 844-404-7400. Following a short screening process, participants will be able to talk with an attorney about their legal questions in the areas of family law, protection orders, landlord-tenant law, consumer rights and debt collection, probate, and small claims. Attorneys will spend up to half an hour on the phone with each client, if needed. In addition to individual legal advice, volunteer attorneys can also help with court forms, explain the general law and procedure for the covered topics, and provide information about other services available to their region.

This clinic is one of five that has or will launch this year with a focus on increasing legal services to residents in rural areas of Colorado under the Pro Bono Innovation Fund Grant received by Colorado Legal Services from the Legal Services Corporation. For more information on this clinic, please call 303-866-9384.
