The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and prime contractor Simon are set to begin a $7.9 million resurfacing project along Colorado Highway 63 north and south of the Town of Akron this summer. The work aims to improve road conditions and safety for drivers in Washington County.
Project Overview
The project will cover approximately nine miles of CO 63, from Mile Point 25.1 (south of Akron) to Mile Point 34.3 (north of town). Key improvements include:
- Milling and pavement overlay to resurface the road;
- Lane striping and new signage installation;
- Shoulder grading for improved drainage and safety;
- Guardrail replacements in select areas;
- Erosion control measures along affected sections.
Construction is scheduled to begin the week of June 2, 2025, and continue through October 2025. Work will occur Monday through Friday during daylight hours, with potential weekend closures depending on progress.
Traffic Impacts
Motorists should prepare for:
- Single-lane alternating traffic in both directions, managed by flaggers or pilot cars;
- Intermittent delays of up to 15 minutes per segment;
- Roadway sections closed at a time (1–1.5 miles);
- A reduced speed limit from 65 mph to 40 mph along the project corridor.
CDOT urges drivers to check COtrip.org for real-time travel conditions and updates on road closures during construction.
Project Benefits
According to CDOT, the resurfacing will extend the lifespan of CO 63’s pavement while enhancing safety through updated guardrails and improved drainage systems. The work also addresses erosion concerns along the corridor, supporting long-term infrastructure resilience in rural Washington County.
