Friday morning shortly after 4:00 a.m., the Colorado State Patrol responded to a crash on southbound Interstate 25 just north of Pueblo in southeast Colorado.

According to information from CSP, troopers at the scene believe a red 2007 Ford Expedition SUV, occupied by three people, crashed into a trailer being towed by a military Joint Light Tactical Vehicle. Investigators believe the Expedition was traveling faster than the posted 75 mile-per-hour speed limit.

The JLTV was part of a convoy of military vehicles. Fort Carson has confirmed the personnel and military vehicle involved in the crash are from their post.

The JLTV, which was at the end of the convoy and occupied by four soldiers, was traveling in the right lane when the crash occurred. The trailer had flashing lights, along with a banner which read “Convoy Ahead.”

The trailer and JLTV rolled onto its top and came to rest in the center median. The Expedition also came to final rest in the center median on its wheels. All four soldiers were able to escape the vehicle and rendered aid to people in the Expedition before the soldiers were taken to a hospital as a precaution.

All three people in the Expedition suffered serious injuries and were taken to area hospitals. The driver, a 29-year-old man from Denver, is being investigated for impairment, and charges may be filed pending further investigation and chemical test results.

Southbound I-25 was closed due to debris and to investigate the crash. It reopened at 10:00 a.m.
