Cheyenne County sees storm chances Wednesday night ahead of a 92-degree Friday
Cheyenne County can expect a mostly sunny, near-normal Wednesday, an even chance of showers overnight and a return to the low 90s by Friday, according to the National Weather Service office in Goodland, Kan.
Wednesday at Cheyenne Wells brings mostly sunny skies with a high near 86. Winds will be northwest at 5 to 15 mph, shifting to the northeast in the afternoon. Wednesday night carries a 50 percent chance of showers, first before 1 a.m. and again after 3 a.m., with increasing clouds and a low around 58.
"With the surface low and front likely well south of the area, a slightly colder air mass should be in place over the area and keep temperatures more in the 80s," a meteorologist with the National Weather Service forecast office in Goodland, Kan., wrote in Tuesday's Area Forecast Discussion. Storm chances Wednesday were described as much lower and largely confined to areas south of Highway 40, with most of the forcing well to the south.
Storm outlook and fire weather
Any storm that does reach the area Wednesday is expected to remain below severe limits, though forecasters said a marginal severe storm with a wind gust near 60 mph could not be ruled out. Thursday looks quieter still, with shower and storm chances under 15 percent and no clear forcing mechanism near the area.
No watches, warnings or advisories were in effect for the Colorado portion of the Goodland forecast area as of Tuesday afternoon, and no Red Flag Warning covered Cheyenne County.

Friday is the warmest day of the period, with sunny skies and a high near 92. Forecasters expect highs in the mid-90s across the wider area Friday before a cold front arrives. Friday night turns partly cloudy with a low around 60 and a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before midnight.
Weekend outlook
Saturday cools sharply behind the overnight front, with mostly sunny skies, breezy conditions and a high near 79. Saturday night is partly cloudy with a low around 55, though forecasters noted storm chances could increase near midnight farther east, with heavy rain and small hail the main concerns.
Sunday rebounds to a high near 86 under mostly sunny, breezy skies. A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms arrives Sunday night with a low around 57. Forecasters put confidence in severe weather over the weekend at only about 25 percent, citing a lack of forcing.
Storm chances continue into early next week as an upper-level trough moves through the northern United States, and forecasters said whichever day the trough arrives will carry the best chance for severe weather. Temperatures are expected to settle into the 80s for the remainder of the period.
