Tyler Boyd Reilly, a former Boulder County Sheriff's Office deputy, was arrested in the early morning hours of Monday, after firing an AR-15 style rifle at the Boulder County Sheriff's Office Headquarters and allegedly shooting at police vehicles at the Broomfield Police Department.

Reilly, 40, faces charges stemming from three separate incidents. He had previously worked in both the jail and patrol divisions of the Boulder County Sheriff's Office and resigned May 25, 2024, in lieu of termination for cause.

The incident began at approximately 12:02 a.m. when the Boulder County Sheriff's Office Communications Center received a call from a male reporting anxiety. The caller phoned back at 12:08 a.m. and, while being transferred to the Westminster Police Department, made threats against Boulder County Sheriff's Office facilities including the Boulder County Jail at 3200 Airport Road and the Sheriff's Office Headquarters at 5600 Flatiron Parkway, Boulder. Investigators determined the calls originated from Reilly.

Law enforcement databases indicated at approximately 12:37 a.m. that Reilly's vehicle had traveled northbound on State Highway 287 from Dillon Road in Boulder County. Deputies were staged at the Headquarters, Jail, and Communications campuses, all of which had staff inside.

At about 1:08 a.m., a Boulder County Sheriff's Office sergeant observed Reilly at the front door of the Sheriff's Office Headquarters. Reilly fired multiple rounds at the entry area. No entry was gained. Deputies confronted Reilly outside the Headquarters entryway and took him into custody without incident.

Investigators subsequently determined Reilly had also stopped at the Broomfield Police Department, 7 Descombes Drive, Broomfield, where he fired rounds at multiple police vehicles.

No injuries were reported in Boulder or Broomfield counties. There is no ongoing threat to the public.

Charges from the Boulder County Sheriff's Office incident include Attempted First-Degree Burglary (F4), Felony Menacing with a Deadly Weapon (F5), Attempted First-Degree Criminal Trespass (F6), Criminal Mischief with damage between $2,000 and $5,000 (F6), Prohibited Use of Weapons (M1), Resisting a Peace Officer (M2), Reckless Endangerment (M2), and Obstructing Governmental Operations (M2).

Charges from the Broomfield Police Department incident include Criminal Mischief with damage between $100,000 and $1,000,000 (F3), Prohibited Use of Weapons (M1), Reckless Endangerment (M2), Obstructing Governmental Operations (M2), and Second-Degree Criminal Trespass (Petty Offense).

A charge stemming from an incident at the Boulder County Jail after Reilly was taken into custody — Second-Degree Assault on a Peace Officer Causing Bodily Injury (F4) — was also filed.
