National School Bus Safety Week begins October 19, 2026. The Colorado State Patrol is reminding drivers that they are responsible for keeping children safe in school zones, at bus stops and around school buses.

A new state law took effect in August of this year. The bill, HB26-1318, defines school zones as all roadways within at least 1,000 feet of a school property or boundary. Penalties and charges are doubled for certain speeding violations and other aggressive driving offenses in a school zone with proper signs posted. The bill is available at leg.colorado.gov/bills/hb26-1318.

School zone safety does not stop at school property. It also applies to school bus stops.

Each year, school buses are involved in near misses and crashes. One of the most common risks is drivers illegally passing a stopped school bus that has its red lights flashing. This puts children at risk as they cross the street, get on the bus or get off the bus.

When a school bus stops with its stop sign arm out and red lights flashing, drivers going in both directions must stop completely. The only exception is for drivers going the opposite direction when a raised median or other physical barrier separates the roadway.

Drivers must stop at least 20 feet before reaching a school bus that is stopped with its red lights flashing. This applies whether the bus is on your side of the road, on the opposite side of the road or at an intersection.

Drivers do not have to stop if the bus is on a roadway opposite them that is separated by a raised or depressed median or other physical barrier.

Drivers must stay stopped until the flashing red lights turn off. Use caution after the bus starts to move, because children may be crossing or near the road. Wait and watch before going on.

Caregivers and other drivers can lead by example and drive safely. Children rely on drivers to avoid distractions and follow slower posted speeds. Don't flunk the School Bus Safety Week test. Slow down, pay attention and stop for the bus. Keep students safe every day of the year, not only during National School Bus Safety Week.
