A cold front that swept through Kiowa County Thursday left temperatures roughly 35 degrees cooler Friday, but a rapid weekend warm-up is expected to bring highs back to the upper 70s by Saturday and the mid-80s by Sunday. Forecasters have issued a Fire Weather Watch for Kiowa County for Saturday afternoon, with gusty south winds, low humidity and warm temperatures expected to combine to produce critical fire weather conditions.

Friday will begin mostly cloudy before clearing through the afternoon, with a high near 53 degrees. North-northeast winds of 10 to 15 mph will weaken and shift to the southeast by afternoon. Friday night will be partly cloudy with a low near 32 degrees, with south winds of 15 to 20 mph and gusts up to 30 mph.

“Strong cold front moves through the plains late this afternoon/tonight, bringing significantly cooler temperatures and a few light rain/snow showers overnight into Friday,” Eric Petersen, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pueblo, wrote in Thursday’s Area Forecast Discussion. Petersen noted the cooler air will be replaced quickly, with temperatures recovering well above normal by the weekend.

Saturday: Fire weather watch in effect, high near 79

Saturday will be sunny with a high near 79 degrees and breezy south winds of 15 to 25 mph. A Fire Weather Watch is in effect for Kiowa County from noon to 7 p.m. MDT Saturday, issued by the National Weather Service in Pueblo. Forecasters cited the combination of warm temperatures, critically low humidity and sustained south winds as the primary drivers of elevated fire danger. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning through at least Saturday evening.

Saturday night will be partly cloudy with a low near 42 degrees. South-southeast winds of 5 to 15 mph will shift to the west-northwest after midnight.

The National Weather Service in Pueblo said a more active weather pattern is developing for the week ahead, with shower and thunderstorm chances increasing across the region toward the middle of next week. Initial precipitation will focus over the mountains before spreading to lower elevations. The Climate Prediction Center has forecast above-normal precipitation chances for the broader region. Residents should monitor updated forecasts at weather.gov as the pattern evolves.
