Dawn James takes Oath of Office as Kiowa County Judge
December 22, 2025, at the Kiowa County Courthouse Courtroom, 15th District Chief Judge Tarryn L. Johnson, delivered the oath of office to Sabrian Dawn James.
Dawn was appointed by Lieutenant Governor Dianne Primavera to the Kiowa County Court in the 15th Judicial District. The vacancy is occasioned by the resignation of the Honorable Pamela E. Johnston.
James is a teacher at Eads High School and an Adjunct Professor at Lamar Community College, positions she has held since 2008.

Previously, she was a teacher at Karval School District (2003-2008); Adjunct Instructor at Lamar Community College (2002-2003); and Interim teacher at Rocky Ford High School (2002).
James earned her B.A. and M.A. from Colorado State University Pueblo in 2002 and 2012, respectively.
James said of her appointment, "I am excited about this new opportunity, especially since I can continue to teach full-time.
I have arranged with my administration to be able to get a sub to cover during the days I have court."
In 2024 Dawn was awarded Citizen of the Year by the Eads Chamber of Commerce
Colorado’s 15th Judicial District includes Cheyenne, Kiowa, Prowers and Baca Counties.
