A Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control helicopter experienced a small electrical fire in the cockpit Tuesday, while actively supporting firefighting operations at the Hidden Creek Fire near Rye.

The Bell 205 helicopter, operating as N3804C and based out of Canon City, was returning from a water drop at approximately 12:45 p.m. when the pilot smelled and then saw smoke. The pilot, the only person on board, followed standard emergency procedures and executed an emergency landing in a nearby field. No injuries were reported.

DFPC is conducting a mechanical assessment of the helicopter. An investigation following standard safety and aviation protocols is also underway. Additional information will be shared as it becomes available.
