Fatal two-vehicle crash on Highway 550 kills one, closes road near Ridgway
A 34-year-old man was killed and two passengers were hospitalized after a two-vehicle crash on Highway 550 near Ridgway Monday evening, prompting a full closure of the highway in both directions.
The Colorado State Patrol responded to the crash at approximately 5:33 p.m. on April 6 at milepost 103, south of Ridgway in Ouray County. The collision involved a Dodge Caravan and a Ford F350 that was hauling a trailer.
The driver of the Dodge Caravan, a 34-year-old male, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Ouray County Coroner will release the identity of the deceased once next of kin have been notified.
A 12-year-old female passenger in the Caravan was airlifted to a local area hospital. A 74-year-old female passenger was transported by ground ambulance to a local area hospital. The conditions of both passengers were unknown as of Monday evening.
The driver of the Ford F350 reported no injuries.
The Colorado State Patrol Vehicular Crimes Unit is leading the investigation. The cause of the crash has not been determined.
The crash comes despite an overall downward trend in roadway deaths. State data from 2025 showed that Colorado traffic fatalities had fallen 21 percent compared to the prior year.
Highway 550 was closed in both directions Monday evening during the investigation.
