A head-on collision between two vehicles on Highway 50 near milepost 155 west of Gunnison killed one driver and critically injured another Monday, temporarily closing the roadway before it was reopened.

At about 2:22 p.m., a Chevrolet Silverado driven by a 61-year-old male from Morrison veered into the westbound lane and struck a Jeep Wrangler head-on. The Jeep, driven by a 28-year-old male from Leadville, was pulling a small camper trailer. Both vehicles spun on impact. The Silverado came to rest facing west; the Wrangler left the westbound shoulder, rolled, and came to rest on its right side before catching fire.

The driver of the Silverado was pronounced deceased while being airlifted to the hospital. The driver of the Wrangler was airlifted with life-threatening injuries.

The name of the deceased will be released by the Gunnison County Coroner once next-of-kin notifications have been made.
