Heat advisory for Lamar as highs hit 106 Saturday and Sunday
A heat advisory is in effect for Lamar and Prowers County from noon to 8 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday as hazy sunshine drives highs to near 106 degrees each day — the peak of a hot spell that keeps triple-digit temperatures over the area into the middle of next week.
Saturday brings widespread haze with sunny, hot conditions, a high near 106, and south winds of 5 to 15 mph. A 10 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms develops after 5 p.m. Saturday night is partly cloudy once the haze fades, with a low around 68 and south-southeast winds of 10 to 15 mph.
"The main concern for the short term will be the heat," Stephen Hodanish, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pueblo, wrote in Saturday's Area Forecast Discussion, forecasting 100 to 108 degrees across most of the plains with heat advisories in effect for a good part of the region.
Elevated fire danger and dry lightning risk this weekend
Beyond the heat, fire weather concerns are elevated across the far eastern plains both Saturday and Sunday, with afternoon winds around 25 mph and humidity near 15 percent. Isolated, high-based thunderstorms are possible late Saturday afternoon and evening — the best chance running roughly from La Junta toward Kim — bringing locally strong, gusty winds with little rain. The Pueblo office warns that dry lightning, which can spark new fires, will be a greater concern Sunday evening over the far eastern plains.

Advisory-level heat repeats Sunday
Sunday is sunny and hot with a high near 106 again as west-southwest winds turn east-southeast in the afternoon. A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms develops before 9 p.m. Sunday night, with partly cloudy skies and a low around 69.
Extended outlook: heat holds early week, then the monsoon arrives
Monday stays sunny and hot with a high near 105, and Tuesday reaches about 103, each followed by slight overnight storm chances. Wednesday begins the pattern change with a high near 98 and a 10 percent chance of afternoon storms, then a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms Wednesday night. Forecasters expect rain chances to increase significantly from midweek into next weekend, with 1 to 2 inches or more possible across parts of the region, below-normal temperatures by late week, and a growing flash flood concern.
During the heat advisory, residents should drink plenty of fluids, stay in air conditioning when possible, avoid strenuous activity during the afternoon, never leave children or pets in vehicles, and check on elderly neighbors and livestock.
