Prowers County faces a hot, sunny weekend, with a high near 96 in Lamar Saturday rising to 98 Sunday — the leading edge of a warming trend that could push readings past 100 early next week.

Saturday brings sunny skies and a high near 96, with an east wind of 10 to 15 miles per hour. Saturday night will be mostly clear, with a low around 64 and an east wind of 10 to 15 mph becoming light after midnight.

“Monsoon plume shifts westward bringing a downward trend in thunderstorm coverage over the mountains for Saturday and Sunday with temperatures heating up,” a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pueblo wrote in Saturday’s Area Forecast Discussion.

Triple-digit heat looms behind the weekend

The weekend's heat comes amid deepening drought across south central and southeast Colorado, according to the National Weather Service in Pueblo. Forecasters said heat advisories may be needed for portions of the southeast plains early next week, with Lamar's forecast high reaching about 104 Monday.

With monsoon moisture shifted west of the region, rain chances remain near zero through the weekend across the southeast plains.
