Heavy rain possible Wednesday night as storms continue in Cheyenne County
Another round of showers and thunderstorms — some capable of heavy rainfall — is likely in Cheyenne County Wednesday night before drier weather arrives Thursday, according to the National Weather Service in Goodland, Kansas. Wednesday starts mostly cloudy in Cheyenne Wells before turning sunny with a high near 91, with Thursday reaching 95 and Friday near 92.
Wednesday begins mostly cloudy, then gradually becomes sunny with a high near 91 as northwest winds of 5 to 10 mph shift to the southeast in the afternoon. Showers and thunderstorms are likely Wednesday night, mainly before 10 p.m., with a 60 percent chance of precipitation and a low around 62. Some storms could produce heavy rainfall before skies gradually clear overnight.
"A daily potential for late afternoon and evening storms, potentially severe, may continue through the rest of the work week," forecasters with the National Weather Service forecast office in Goodland, Kan., wrote in Tuesday's Area Forecast Discussion. Storms developing over the Colorado Front Range, Cheyenne Ridge and Palmer Divide each afternoon are expected to drift south and east, giving eastern Colorado the best chance of rain.
Cold front Thursday, possible fire weather concerns by Sunday
A cold front crossing the plains Thursday should bring drier air and lower storm chances, with highs easing into the low 90s Friday and around 91 Saturday. No watches, warnings or advisories are currently in effect for Cheyenne County.
Looking toward the weekend, Goodland forecasters note that drier air and gusty winds could become a concern. Humidity values Sunday into Monday may drop into the low 20s to upper teens while wind gusts top 30 mph — short of formal fire weather criteria, but worth watching given drying fuels across eastern Colorado.
