
Kids free fishing day at Kinney Lake State Wildlife Area
The Eastern Colorado Grassland Coalition and Colorado Parks and Wildlife will host a Free Family Fishing Day at Kinney Lake State Wildlife Area near Hugo June 20 from 8:00 a.m. to noon. The event offers free fishing for children under age 16; participants 16 or older must have a valid fishing license.
The lake will be stocked by Colorado Parks and Wildlife, which also will provide free fishing poles to the first 30 kids who arrive. Families are encouraged to attend regardless of experience level, as the event is open to all. Guided bird walks also will be available for attendees interested in exploring Kinney Lake’s reputation as a birding hotspot, home to migratory birds from Colorado’s Eastern Plains.
The State Wildlife Area is located off County Road 33 near Hugo, approximately one hour northeast of Colorado Springs. Visitors arriving from the north on Highway 40/287 entering Hugo should travel south on CR 32 to CR 2J and turn east for one mile; those from the south from Highway 94 will go north on CR 32 from before turning east onto 2J.
