Lamar climbs toward 99 by Friday as heat builds over Prowers County
Lamar faces the hottest stretch in southeastern Colorado this week, with sunny skies and highs rising from near 96 Wednesday to near 99 on Friday before monsoon moisture returns for the holiday weekend, the National Weather Service in Pueblo says.
Wednesday is sunny with a high near 96 and a west wind of 10 to 15 mph. Wednesday night is mostly clear with a low around 66 and a south-southwest wind of 5 to 15 mph becoming east-southeast in the evening.
"For Wednesday and Thursday, it will likely be dry over the region," forecaster Stephen Hodanish wrote in Tuesday's Area Forecast Discussion. "Starting Friday, the monsoon flow is forecast to re-develop once again and will likely be with us through early next week."
Heat and dry air raise fire concerns
No Red Flag Warning covered Prowers County or fire weather zone 236 as of Tuesday afternoon, and the Pueblo office listed no watches, warnings or advisories in effect. Still, near-99-degree heat Friday combined with breezy southwest winds of 10 to 15 mph and low afternoon humidity will keep fire conditions elevated across the Lamar area. Moderate to exceptional drought continues across south-central and southeastern Colorado.
Relief, if it comes, arrives with the weekend. Forecasters expect scattered storms over the mountains and isolated to scattered storms on the plains beginning Friday, with some rain potentially heavy as tropical moisture is pulled north into the region.
