The Winter Park Express, affectionately known as the “ski train,” experienced a record-breaking season thanks to an expanded schedule and significantly reduced fares. According to data released Friday by the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), ridership jumped 153 percent this year, totaling 43,919 passengers – up from the same period last winter.

The train, a partnership between Winter Park Resort and Amtrak, operates between Denver and Winter Park Resort/Winter Park-Fraser station during the ski season. Trains consistently ran near capacity, averaging 89 percent full, with many weekends hitting 95 percent or higher.

“Historic ridership increases on the Winter Park Express prove that when Coloradans are provided an affordable, reliable and safe transportation option to get to the mountains, we flock to it,” stated Governor Jared Polis. He highlighted the state investment which allowed for the expansion from three days per week to five – adding Thursday and Monday service in January – and fare reductions of over 40 percent. One-way tickets now start at $19 for adults and $9.50 for children.

CDOT Acting Director Sally Chafee emphasized the benefits beyond convenience, noting that increased train ridership “is helping to take cars off congested roadways and make everyone safer,” while also reducing emissions. Amtrak officials echoed this sentiment, praising their team’s successful handling of the unprecedented demand.

The funding for the improvements came from revenue generated by Colorado's new Congestion Impact Fee on rental cars, administered by the Colorado Transportation Investment Office (CTIO). CTIO Director Piper Darlington anticipates continued growth in ridership as awareness of the expanded service and lower fares spreads.

This success comes at a pivotal moment as Colorado continues to invest in rail infrastructure. A recent agreement with Union Pacific Railroad will allow for continued operations through the Moffat Tunnel while simultaneously enabling expanded passenger rail service. CDOT is currently planning to re-establish passenger rail from Denver to Craig, potentially serving communities like Granby and Steamboat Springs within the next several years.

“The Winter Park Express has been a popular way for decades…the train provides a great alternative,” said Winter Park Resort President Sky Foulkes, expressing gratitude for the partnership with CDOT and Amtrak. Passengers aboard the Winter Park Express can also enjoy panoramic views of the Rockies from the Sightseer Lounge car while enjoying food and beverages.
