Lamar and the surrounding Prowers County area face a sharp swing from a cool, windy Friday to a hot Memorial Day weekend, with highs climbing from the low 70s to the lower 90s by Monday, the National Weather Service in Pueblo said in a forecast issued early Friday.

Friday will be mostly sunny in Lamar with a high near 72. North-northeast winds of 10 to 20 mph are expected to gust to 35 mph through the afternoon before easing after sunset. A chance of showers and thunderstorms develops Friday evening through early Saturday morning, with skies turning mostly cloudy overnight and a low near 42.

“Some scattered thunderstorms again today, not expected to be severe,” Stephen Hodanish, a meteorologist with the Pueblo forecast office, wrote in Friday’s Area Forecast Discussion. Storm coverage is expected to be less than Thursday’s, with the strongest activity favoring the Raton Mesa region south of Lamar.

The Memorial Day weekend warm-up

Temperatures rebound quickly Saturday under sunny skies, with a high near 76 and only a slight afternoon storm chance. Sunday turns sunny and considerably warmer, with a forecast high near 89 and light south winds as the holiday weekend reaches its peak.

Memorial Day is forecast to be the hottest day of the period in Lamar. The high near 92 would be among the warmest readings of the season so far. South winds of 5 to 20 mph will keep conditions breezy, with a slight chance of late-day showers or storms.

Weekend outlook

Saturday and Sunday should provide favorable weather for holiday travel, outdoor recreation and Memorial Day observances across Prowers County. Skies stay mostly sunny, winds remain light to moderate from the south, and afternoon thunderstorms — if they develop at all — are expected to be widely scattered.

Hodanish noted that Sunday’s warm-up will reach “upper 80s over most of the plains,” with thunderstorm activity “isolated and high based.” Overnight temperatures stay mild, with lows near 49 Sunday into Monday.

Extended outlook: Monday and Tuesday

After Memorial Day’s heat, Tuesday brings noticeably stronger southerly winds and a return of afternoon thunderstorm chances. South winds of 15 to 30 mph are forecast to gust to 45 mph, the strongest wind day of the period. Temperatures pull back into the mid-80s.

“Tuesday, moisture increases significantly over the entire region, especially over the interior mtns,” Hodanish wrote, adding that storms “will have the potential to be strong this day as shear will noticeably increase over the region.” Prowers County falls within fire weather zone 236; no red flag warning was in effect for the area Friday morning, though dry vegetation, heat and gusty winds will warrant caution Tuesday.

Safety

Drivers on U.S. 287, U.S. 50 and Colorado 196 should be prepared for crosswind gusts Friday and again Tuesday. Outdoor crews and anyone with travel plans for the holiday weekend should monitor updated forecasts from the National Weather Service in Pueblo at weather.gov/pub.
