A Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputy resorted to using his patrol vehicle to stop a wrong-way driver on Interstate 70 in Lincoln County Sunday night.

According to a social media post by LCSO, multiple calls were received about a vehicle traveling west in the eastbound lanes of I-70. Deputy Mike Hutton was dispatched and made several attempts to gain the driver’s attention. He was unsuccessful.

Due to the volume of Labor Day holiday traffic, Hutton then decided place his vehicle between the wrong-way vehicle and the other traffic, intentionally causing a crash. Hutton and the driver of the other vehicle, who has not been identified, both sustained minor injuries. Hutton was later photographed giving a “thumbs up” sign while receiving treatment.

In a statement, Lincoln County Sheriff Tom Nestor said, “We appreciate the brave decision once again by Deputy Hutton to serve his community above and beyond.”

Last year, Hutton was ambushed and shot multiple times after responding to a report of a theft in progress on Highway 40/287 near Limon. He spent months recovering before returning to work.

Eastbound I-70 was closed for about an hour Sunday night while the Colorado State Patrol investigated. Preliminary reports indicate the driver of the wrong-way vehicle may have had a medical issue.
