On the fourth anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, Nevada Democratic leaders are promoting Question 6 on the November ballot.

The measure would amend the state constitution to protect the right to seek abortion care. It passed in 2024 and needs to pass a second time to become final.

State Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro, D-Las Vegas, said the Dobbs decision is part of a Republican effort to dismantle reproductive rights.

“This decision was made possible by the Trump administration's far-right Supreme Court appointments and appointments that were enabled by an anti-reproductive freedom majority in the U.S. Senate,” Cannizzaro said.

Cannizzaro is running for attorney general. After the Dobbs decision, Nevada legislators passed a bill to protect out-of-state patients who seek abortion care in Nevada and the providers who care for them.

U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen, D-Nev., also spoke in favor of Question 6, responding to federal moves to restrict abortion care.

“Trump's FDA is conducting a politically motivated review of mifepristone, a common abortion medication that has been used safely and effectively for decades,” Rosen said. “And at the end of last year, Donald Trump's VA implemented a near-total abortion ban.”

Last year, Governor Joe Lombardo vetoed a bill that aimed to protect in vitro fertilization and expand insurance coverage to make treatment more affordable. In his veto statement, Lombardo said the bill would place an unmanageable strain on state Medicaid resources.
