One Dead After Boat Capsizes

A 67-year-old man was found dead after Kiowa County agencies were called investigate a capsized boat at Nee Noshe Reservoir south of Eads.

Martin Vitt, of Thornton and Ervin Anthony Vitt of Cedaredge were in a canoe when it overturned Wednesday afternoon.  Martin Vitt was able to swim to shore, then walked back to the other side of the lake to his vehicle where he called 911.

The Kiowa County Sheriff, fire department and ambulance were called to the reservoir at 7:20 p.m. Wednesday. Following a two-hour search, Ervin Vitt was found in the water unresponsive.

The Kiowa County Coroner’s Office is investigating the cause and manner of death.

In addition to the Kiowa County Sheriff's Office, search efforts were assisted by over 40 personnel from the Towner, Sheridan Lake, and Eads Fire Departments, Eads Ambulance Service, Colorado Department of Parks and Wildlife, Lamar Fire Department, Prowers County Fire Department, Prowers County Sheriff’s Office, Wiley Fire Department, Hasty/McClave Fire Department, and the Bent County Office of Emergency Management.
