15 Years Ago - July 10, 2009

  • Dwight Lessenden was chosen as Southeast Colorado Cattlewomen’s Father’s Day Award recipient.
  • East End Events- Sharon Scott: As of July 31, 2009, the United States Postal Service box in Towner will be removed.
  • Rod Johnson catches a 26 inch, 12 pound 6 ounce catfish at Jackson Pond south of Eads.

25 Years Ago - July 9, 1999

  • Dave Esgar of Wiley, an investor in EagleVision LLC, took control of the company. The staff in Eads was informed the following day would be their final day with the company.

40 Years Ago - July 13, 1984

  • Ten cars in an eastbound Denver & Rio Grande Western coal train derailed about 11 west of Eads near Galatea.
  • Senator Bill Armstrong named Betty Shotton as Kiowa County Chairman for the Armstrong re-elect campaign.
  • Eads Rural Volunteer Fire Department and Search & Rescue responded to two fires. First one just west of Eads was grass burning in the ditch was quickly put out. The second was east of Brandon where about six acres of wheat was destroyed before being brought under control.
  • Nursing Home News- LaVerne Fischer: We are trying hard not to complain about the heat after last winter, but with 104 degrees and the air conditioner in the dinning/activity room calling “time out” makes it harder to think cool.

50 Years Ago - July 12, 1974

  • A new agronomy research program has been initiated by CSU which includes test plots located on private land away from the branch Experiment Stations. One such plot is the millet variety test south of Towner.
  • Second Fun Day to be held July 13 at the Eads fairgrounds, sponsored by the Eads Roping Club.

75 Years Ago - 1949

  • A chuckwagon was demolished by a train in Sheridan Lake when it stalled on the tracks. Pots, pans, etc. were scattered thought the area, causing the train to be stalled for an hour.

100 Years Ago - 1924

  • Did you know in Colorado there are 425,000 horses, 253,000 milk cows, 523,000 pigs and 2,444,000 sheep, and ranks second in production of cantaloupes, third in cabbages, and first in pinto beans?
