A passenger train and a semi-tanker truck collided Wednesday morning in Garfield County, derailing six passenger cars and two locomotives and spilling an estimated 6,000 gallons of road oil. No passengers were reported injured, and the truck driver was hospitalized with minor injuries, the Colorado State Patrol said.

Troopers responded at about 9:40 a.m. on May 6 to the area of Highway 6 near Mile Pond Road, milepost 95, after a passenger train struck a semi-tanker truck on the train tracks, the State Patrol said.

The semi-tanker was split open in the crash, releasing the road oil onto the ground. The driver of the semi-tanker was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries.

Six passenger cars and two locomotives derailed, with the rail damaged or split in places, the State Patrol said. The rail line will be closed for an extended period for repairs. The number of passengers on board was not immediately known, but the State Patrol said no passengers reported injuries. Local buses were transporting passengers to a safe location.

Highway 6 will be closed for an extended period of time. For road closure information, the State Patrol directed motorists to COTrip.org.

The Colorado State Patrol is the lead investigating agency.
