A red flag warning takes effect across western Kiowa County on Wednesday as sunny skies, a high near 94 degrees and gusty afternoon winds combine to raise the fire danger around Eads, according to the National Weather Service in Pueblo. The warning runs from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., after which a sharp wind shift ushers in a cooler but blustery Thursday and a swing from midweek heat to weekend storm chances.

Wednesday brings full sunshine to the Eads area, with a high near 94 degrees. North-northwest winds of 10 to 15 mph are expected to turn south at 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon, with gusts to 30 mph. Winds stay elevated Wednesday night as skies remain mostly clear and the low slips to around 57 degrees, with northwest gusts that could reach 35 mph.

The fire-weather concern was significant enough that forecasters placed western Kiowa County under a red flag warning Wednesday afternoon, citing the combination of low humidity, warm temperatures and gusty winds. The weather service advises against any outdoor burning while the warning is in effect, as fires can ignite and spread quickly under those conditions.

A windy turn behind the heat

Behind Wednesday's warmth, a stronger push of north wind arrives Thursday. The weather service forecasts sustained north winds of 25 to 30 mph, easing to 15 to 20 mph by afternoon, with gusts as high as 45 mph, even as the high drops to near 81 degrees under continued sunshine. Skies stay mostly clear Thursday night with a low around 50 degrees as winds gradually relax.

Temperatures rebound to near 93 degrees Friday before the pattern grows more active over the weekend, when rising storm chances and a cold front knock highs from the mid-90s on Saturday into the low 70s by Sunday.

Thursday and Friday

Thursday is the windiest day of the period for Kiowa County. Sunshine continues, but the cooler air behind the wind shift holds the high near 81 degrees, and north gusts to 45 mph will make for a raw afternoon. Winds ease Thursday night as the low drops to around 50 degrees.

Friday warms again under mostly sunny skies, with a high near 93 degrees and breezy south winds of 10 to 15 mph increasing to 20 to 25 mph, gusting to 35. A 20 percent chance of evening showers and thunderstorms arrives Friday night ahead of the weekend's wetter pattern.

Weekend outlook

The weekend brings the period's biggest change. Saturday stays warm and mostly sunny with a high near 95 degrees, but a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms develops Saturday night. Sunday turns markedly cooler and unsettled, with mostly cloudy skies, a 40 percent chance of storms and a high near 73 degrees as easterly winds hold around 15 mph. Rain chances linger into Sunday night.

Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from the National Weather Service in Pueblo, particularly while Wednesday's red flag warning remains in effect and as storm chances increase over the weekend.
