Showers and storms move through Cheyenne County midweek with severe risk Thursday
A series of upper-level disturbances will bring occasional shower and thunderstorm chances to Cheyenne County over the next several days, with the highest risk of strong storms Thursday afternoon and evening before a drier, warmer pattern arrives for the weekend.
Wednesday in the Cheyenne Wells area will be cloudy, with a high near 58 and southeast winds of 10 to 15 mph. Scattered light rain showers are expected to develop overnight as a shortwave moves through, with the chance of showers and thunderstorms increasing after sunset. The overnight low is expected to drop to around 39, with a 70 percent chance of precipitation by morning.
Meteorologists in the Goodland, Kan., forecast office wrote in Tuesday’s Area Forecast Discussion that “occasional shower chances” will continue through the rest of the week, with showers and isolated thunderstorms moving across the area Wednesday evening producing “localized wind gusts of 40-50 mph.”
Marginal severe risk Thursday
Thursday carries a marginal severe weather risk for Cheyenne County and surrounding areas. A stronger shortwave trough is forecast to move across eastern Colorado at the time of peak afternoon heating, with a corridor of stronger instability from Limon to Fort Morgan combined with deep-layer wind shear of about 35 knots.
The Goodland office wrote that “a marginally severe storm or two will be possible” as storms move eastward from Colorado into the area Thursday night. Forecasters expect rain amounts of up to an inch in eastern Colorado Thursday evening, with about a quarter to a half inch likely overnight across the broader area. In Cheyenne Wells, Thursday’s high should reach near 62 with a 60 percent chance of rain showers and storms, followed by an overnight low near 42 and a 90 percent chance of precipitation.

Thursday and Friday
A surface cold front is expected to move slowly through the area Friday morning, with continued showers and isolated thunderstorms. Both the GFS and ECMWF computer models push the front south into Oklahoma by Friday afternoon, while the NAM model is slower; forecasters note that confidence remains low on the front’s exact placement and any associated severe weather. Cheyenne Wells is forecast to see a high near 66 Friday under mostly sunny skies, with north winds of 10 to 15 mph.
Weekend outlook
Weak southwest flow and a building ridge of high pressure are expected to bring a warming and drying trend through the weekend. Saturday in Cheyenne Wells should be mostly sunny with a high near 72 and only a slight chance of late-day showers or storms. Sunday looks sunny and warmer, with a high near 79 and light south winds. Forecasters caution that relative humidity values are expected to trend down again early next week, which may begin to push fire weather concerns back into the discussion.
No fire weather watches
No Red Flag Warnings or fire weather watches are in effect for Cheyenne County. Forecasters at the Goodland office continue to monitor fire weather potential heading into next week as drier air and gusty afternoon winds return.
