Kiowa County will see lingering thunderstorm chances Wednesday through Friday before hot, dry weather builds in over the weekend, the National Weather Service in Pueblo says. Eads can expect a partly sunny Wednesday with a high near 81, followed by warmer days Thursday and Friday and a sharp turn toward triple-digit heat by Saturday.

Wednesday brings partly sunny skies giving way to mostly sunny and breezy conditions, with a high near 81. South winds of 5 to 10 mph will shift to the south-southeast and pick up to 15 to 20 mph through the day. Overnight, a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms moves in, mainly after 7 p.m., with a low around 56 and southeast winds gusting to 30 mph.

Stephen Hodanish, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pueblo, wrote in Tuesday's Area Forecast Discussion that a severe storm threat will continue across the plains into Friday, with the weekend turning "HOT and DRY" as 100-degree readings return. He added that meteorological conditions for extreme fire behavior will be in place across the plains both Saturday and Sunday.

Heat and fire danger build for the weekend

After a stretch of unsettled weather, the plains will warm rapidly. Saturday's high near 100 and Sunday's near 99 will arrive alongside breezy southwest winds gusting to 35 mph and very low humidity — a combination the Pueblo office flagged as supportive of extreme fire behavior. No Red Flag Warning was in effect for Kiowa County as of Tuesday; the active warning and Wednesday fire weather watch covered the interior mountains and valleys to the west. Even so, residents should use caution with anything that could spark a fire as the weekend approaches.
