Storms return Wednesday night before heat builds across Kiowa County
Showers and thunderstorms are likely across Kiowa County Wednesday night before a drier, hotter pattern settles in for the end of the week, according to the National Weather Service in Pueblo. Wednesday brings sunny skies and a high near 93 degrees in Eads, with Thursday climbing to 96 and Friday holding near 94.
Wednesday is expected to be sunny with a high near 93, as west winds of 5 to 15 mph shift to the east during the morning. Showers and thunderstorms become likely Wednesday night, mainly before 10 p.m., with a 60 percent chance of precipitation and a low around 61. Rainfall amounts between a tenth and a quarter of an inch are possible, with higher amounts in thunderstorms.
The midweek storm chances follow an active Tuesday that brought a severe thunderstorm watch to the plains along and north of U.S. 50. Storm potential returns later in the week as well. "We may see some organized severe storms over the eastern plains" Friday, meteorologist Stephen Hodanish of the National Weather Service in Pueblo wrote in Tuesday's Area Forecast Discussion, pointing to a stronger disturbance and increasing winds aloft moving over the region.
Monsoon moisture gives way to weekend heat
Deep monsoon moisture remains over southeast Colorado through midweek, keeping rain chances alive into Wednesday night before drier air works in Thursday. By the weekend, forecasters expect mainly dry, hot conditions, with isolated storms confined largely to the mountains.
No fire weather warnings are in effect for Kiowa County. Even so, temperatures near 97 on Sunday, gusty southeast winds to 30 mph and drying conditions heading into early next week could raise fire concerns across the plains.

Thursday will be sunny with a high near 96 as light south winds turn to the north in the afternoon. Thursday night is mostly clear with a low around 62 and only a 10 percent chance of a shower or storm before midnight.
Friday stays sunny with a high near 94 and north winds of 10 to 15 mph becoming east in the afternoon. Storm chances return Friday night at 30 percent, mainly before midnight, under partly cloudy skies with a low around 59.

Saturday looks sunny with a high near 93 and south-southeast winds of 10 to 15 mph, followed by a clear night with a low around 60. Sunday turns hotter and breezier, with sunshine, a high near 97 and south-southeast winds of 15 to 20 mph gusting to 30 mph. Sunday night stays mostly clear with a low around 63, and the heat continues into early next week with highs near 100 expected Monday.
With storms Wednesday night capable of brief heavy rain and lightning, residents should stay weather-aware during the evening hours and be prepared to move indoors when thunder is heard.
