Sunny skies, gusty southeast winds and steadily building heat are on tap for Kiowa County this week, with highs in Eads climbing from near 90 Wednesday to the mid-90s by the end of the week.

Wednesday brings sunny and breezy conditions to Eads, with a high near 90. A south-southeast wind of 10 to 15 mph will increase to 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon, and gusts could reach 35 mph. Wednesday night will be mostly clear and breezy, with a low around 61 and southeast winds of 15 to 25 mph.

The National Weather Service in Pueblo, which issues forecasts for Kiowa County, had no watches, warnings or advisories in effect Tuesday afternoon, and no fire weather warnings covered the county. Forecasters at the neighboring Goodland, Kan., office said in Tuesday’s Area Forecast Discussion that warm and breezy conditions would continue across the region through the end of the week, with hotter weather — and possible triple-digit readings — arriving over the weekend.

Heat builds through the weekend

A strong ridge of high pressure settling over the Rockies is expected to keep eastern Colorado hot and dry into next week. Highs in Eads rise a degree or two each day, reaching 93 Friday, 95 Saturday and 97 Sunday. Winds stay breezy through Friday, with gusts of 30 to 35 mph possible, before easing over the weekend. Although no fire weather warnings were in effect Tuesday, hot afternoons combined with gusty winds and drying grasses can elevate fire danger, and residents should use caution with outdoor burning and spark-producing equipment.
