Cheyenne County will start the period with morning fog and lingering thunderstorm chances before drying out and heating up over the weekend, the National Weather Service in Goodland, Kan., says. Cheyenne Wells can expect a high near 78 Wednesday, storm chances through Thursday, and temperatures climbing toward the upper 90s by Saturday and Sunday.

Wednesday begins with patchy fog and a slight chance of showers before 7 a.m., then turns mostly sunny and breezy with a high near 78. Northeast winds of 5 to 10 mph will become south at 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon. A better chance of showers and thunderstorms returns Wednesday night, with a 70 percent chance of precipitation and a low around 56.

A meteorologist with the National Weather Service forecast office in Goodland, Kan., noted in Tuesday's Area Forecast Discussion that severe weather chances continue through at least Thursday before the pattern shifts to weak ridging Friday. Beyond the weekend, the office said high temperatures will climb into the 90s to low 100s, with breezy afternoons and gusts around 35 mph possible across the Colorado counties.

Severe storm threat lingers into Thursday

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch covered eastern Colorado into early Wednesday as the period began, and the Goodland office said additional strong to severe storms were possible overnight and into Wednesday morning, with large hail the main hazard. Thursday carries a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before the weather quiets. No fire-weather warnings were in effect for Cheyenne County as of Tuesday, though attention turns to heat and wind by the weekend.
