Tornado destroys home in Prowers County
Thunderstorms returned to southeast Colorado Friday afternoon, with one spawning a tornado which destroyed a home and other buildings south of Granada in Prowers County.
According to the Prowers County Sheriff’s Office, at least one tornado touched down 15 miles south of Granada. Deputies responded to Prowers County Roads 25 and R, and confirmed the tornado had destroyed the home as well as nearby buildings and vehicles.
A family in the home was able to take shelter in the basement and avoid injuries.
A storm chaser first reported a tornado in the area at 5:49 p.m. An additional chaser report was received at 6:11 p.m. for a tornado 13 miles south of Holly. Law enforcement officials also reported a tornado in that area at 6:23 p.m.
Heavy rain was recorded in the area. The NWS estimated between 1.5 and 3 inches of rain fell along the path of the storm through Prowers County, with the heaviest amounts south of Holly near the Colorado-Kansas border.
A portion of Baca County was under a tornado warning Friday evening. Local emergency management officials reported spotting a tornado 15 miles southeast of Campo. NWS radar indicated rotation in the area as well.
